The historic Westwood home of James N. Gamble, industrialist, philanthropist and inventor of Ivory soap will be demolished as early as Monday morning. Gamble lived in the house for 57 years, from 1875 until his death in the house at the age of 95 in 1932. During his time in the house he named Ratonagh, for his ancestral hometown in present-day Northern Ireland, Gamble invented Ivory soap (in 1879) and turned Procter & Gamble into an international powerhouse. He also donated millions to build hundreds of churches across America as well as Cincinnati’s Christ Hospital and Nippert Stadium.
So ends a four-year battle by preservationists to save the 13-room Victorian mansion that was in relatively good shape as recently as 2008.
